Where the desert stops. Cabo starts at the rock.

The four days that fill up first in Los Cabos.
A beach that only camels reach, a catamaran with a swim ladder, a desert track above the Pacific and a kayak under the arch. What each costs, and what the people who took it say.
01The famous oneCabo Beach Camel Ride, Mexican Buffet and Tequila TastingCamels along the Migriño sand, then a buffet and a tequila flight in the shade. More travellers book this than anything else in Cabo.
02The full day outLos Cabos Luxury Sailing, Snorkel and Lunch CruiseA catamaran off Land’s End with lunch, an open bar and a swim stop. The one splurge the rest of the week gets planned around.
03The desert dayATV Tour, Camel Ride, Tequila Tasting and Mexican Buffet LunchOff-road above the Pacific, a camel on the beach and tequila to finish. Three Cabo afternoons welded into one.
04Land’s End up closeLos Cabos Arch and Playa del Amor Tour by Glass Bottom KayakA glass-bottom kayak through the arch and into Playa del Amor. You get closer than any panga is allowed to.
Panga to the arch, catamaran for the day, or a sunset with a bar tab.
Three ways to be on the Sea of Cortez, and they are not the same afternoon. What each costs to board, and how long it keeps you out.
Marina town, art town, and the desert coast between them.
Cabo San Lucas runs on its marina and the rock at the end of the peninsula. San José del Cabo, 33 km north, keeps a colonial square and a Thursday art walk. Six starting points, and the best day out in each.

Behind the hotel strip the desert starts, and it runs to the Pacific.
Arroyos, cactus forest and a dune field that ends on the sand at Migriño. Machines go out in the cool of the morning, camels in the afternoon, horses at either end of the day. This is the half of Cabo that has nothing to do with the marina.
Four Cabo bookings that run on a calendar, not on your holiday.
Most of this coast can be arranged from a bar stool the night before. These four run on migration dates, gallery seasons and swell that takes no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Luxury Catamaran Whale Watching Cabo San LucasHumpbacks and greys are in the bay from mid-December to mid-April. Outside those months the boats do not go out, because there is nothing to go out to.
- 02La Paz Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour and Lunch From Los CabosThe whale sharks gather in the bay at La Paz roughly October to April, on a permit system with a daily cap on boats. It is a long day out and it sells ahead.
- 03San Jose del Cabo Art Walk, Beer Tasting &Chocolate DemonstrationThe San José del Cabo art walk runs Thursday evenings from November to June. Turn up in August and the galleries are shut.
- 04Los Cabos Surf Lesson at Costa AzulCosta Azul works on southern swell, which means summer. A winter surf lesson is a paddling lesson.
What a day out in Los Cabos actually costs.
Every tour on the site grouped by price, airport runs left out. A good share of the best Cabo days come in under the price of dinner on the marina.
Panga trips to the arch, glass-bottom boats, tequila tastings and the taco walks downtown.
The full-day standards: ATV and camel combos, snorkel sails, whale boats and the corridor day trips.
San José del Cabo is the half of Los Cabos nobody warns you about.
Everything in San José del Cabo →
Thirty-three kilometres up the corridor the noise stops. A mission church on a jacaranda square, an estuary full of herons, galleries that open late on Thursdays, and a surf break at Costa Azul that forgives beginners. These three carry more travellers than anything else in town.

Boats out of Puerto Los Cabos
The marina at Puerto Los Cabos puts you on the Sea of Cortez without the Land’s End traffic. Same fish, same whales in season, a fraction of the boats.
The arch is a twenty-minute boat ride and the whole point of Cabo.
Granite folded into an arch where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, with Lovers Beach on one side and Divorce Beach on the other. Pangas run all day from the marina steps. Clear-bottom boats and kayaks get closer, and the sea lions on Pelican Rock are on the way.
Every trip out to the arch →Los Cabos runs out fast. What is past it is worth the drive.
Todos Santos is an hour up the Pacific side, a mango-and-mission town with a surf beach. Cabo Pulmo protects the only hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. La Paz puts you in the water with whale sharks. All three are day trips, all three need an early start.
- 1La Paz Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour and Lunch From Los Cabosfrom $259
- 2Magical Todos Santos Tour, Camel Ranch, Lunch and Tequilafrom $89
- 3La Paz World Class Snorkeling in Balandras Hidden Beachesfrom $219
Three things that only happen at the end of Baja.
Beach clubs and jet skis exist on every coast. A granite arch where two seas meet, camel trains on a Pacific dune field, and agave poured a hundred miles from where it grew do not.

El Arco and the two beaches
The peninsula ends in a stack of granite the sea has drilled straight through. Step off a panga on the Sea of Cortez side and you are on Lovers Beach, calm and swimmable. Walk eighty metres over the sand and you are on the Pacific side, where the undertow has drowned people and nobody swims. Two oceans, one sandbar, and the sea lions barking on Pelican Rock on the way out.

Camels on a Pacific beach
The dunes at Migriño, half an hour up the Pacific side, carry camel trains that came here from a private herd and stayed. It reads as a gimmick until you are on one, high above a beach with no buildings on it, and the guide is telling you which arroyo the ranch water comes from. Most rides end with a buffet and a tequila flight under a palapa.

Tequila that never leaves Mexico
Baja grows no agave. What Cabo has instead is the pick of what Jalisco and Oaxaca send south, including bottlings the export market never sees. A good tasting walks you from a blanco through a reposado to an añejo, explains why the good ones are sipped and not shot, and finishes on a mezcal that smells like a bonfire.

Cabo eats fish, mesquite smoke and a tortilla pressed ten minutes ago.
The good taco stands sit two streets back from the marina, the agave arrives from Jalisco and Oaxaca in bottlings the export market never sees, and the cooking classes finish as lunch. Book the walk before the heat and the tasting for the shade.
